Experience
My life began when I learned how to read. These vehicles of storytelling that transported me to distant lands in my childhood became sources of knowledge in school, allowing me to learn and grow via the written word. From finding typos in books to working on my friends’ papers throughout high school and college, my first career inclination toward the publishing industry was in an editorial role.
Interning at various publications and publishers (Burrow Press, the University of Central Florida’s The Florida Review and The Cypress Dome, Harvard Education Publishing Group) and tutoring writing at universities for over three years have immersed me within this collaborative role, developing expertise in screening submissions, copyediting manuscripts, managing projects, and facilitating with production processes.
I didn’t anticipate finding a home in publishing’s other divisions, and moving to Boston and entering Emerson’s publishing and writing program has broadened both my interests and skills. Here I’ve had the opportunity to learn about the other aspects of the industry in classes and additional internships in sales (Barefoot Books), customer service and circulation (Harvard Education Publishing Group), and marketing (Da Capo Press | Lifelong Books).
Before this program I thought of editorial and marketing/sales as opposites, yet they’re so crucially interdependent in achieving the same goal. I’m interested in how these combine to create compelling products for audiences, be they vendors or consumers.
